Cancer Prevention Foods (Part 1)

This series on foods that help fight cancer is a repeat, but three women I know have been diagnosed with cancer in the past month, so now seems like a good time for a refresher. Do I think adding a little more garlic and beans to my diet will protect me from all harm? No, of course not. But these foods have been shown to improve health and that sounds good to me. I like my tatas; I want to keep them healthy.

My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 45. That felt like a distant milestone until I turned 35. Add to my family history the recent breast cancer diagnosis of a friend – who is my age and stage of life – and it’s a bit of a wake up call. If it can happen to them, it can happen to me. I wanted to know if there was anything I could do now to prevent cancer later (or kill it now, now is good too).

downloadFirst, I took stock of everything I knew about food and cancer prevention; it was summed up with the phrase “Eat berries”. Berries have lots of antioxidants that clean out the free radicals, right? Whatever those are and however that works.

I checked out four different health websites for recommended anti-cancer foods and when I compared the list, five foods stood out: garlic, dried beans, cruciferous vegetables, tea, and curcumin. Since this is a blog post, not a book, I’ll just tell you about my favorite one today. Anyone want to guess? Anyone want to smell my breath and then guess?

garlicGarlic!

Besides making everything it touches delicious, garlic has been used for medicinal purposes since ancient times. It was also used as a weapon of war; they’d just breathe on the enemy and the enemy would run. (It’s the taste of garlic we love, but not the aftertaste.)

So why is garlic a cancer fighting food?

Garlic contains sulfur. (Insert volcano reference here.) I know that sounds bad, but the sulfur combines with other stuff in the garlic to form compounds, and these sulfur compounds really clean house. Garlic’s biggest connection to cancer is its ability to slow or prevent the growth of tumors. For example, one compound makes all cells more vulnerable to the stresses of cell division; tumor cells divide more quickly than normal cells, so they have more stressors and die, whereas normal cells can handle it and live. (See why I called it a weapon?)

Garlic also has antibacterial and antifungal properties; while it fights infection, the rest of your immune system is free to work on other problems, like cancer. Garlic has anti-inflammatory properties as well and inflammation is like PMS on a cellular level; it makes every little problem in your body worse.

How does this apply to the kitchen? Two ways:

  1. garlic choppedWhen you peel, chop, mince, or crush garlic, let it sit for a few minutes before you cook it. Those beautiful sulfur compounds need time to form. If you squeeze your garlic press over a hot pan like I’ve done until now, you get the flavor, but not the compounds.
  2. Eat garlic raw whenever possible. I knew a woman once who sliced cloves into pill sized pieces and swallowed them whole. She said she hardly ever got colds. If you aren’t ready for that level of halitosic commitment, try raw garlic in pesto, guacamole, gazpacho, or mixed with butter and spread on toast.

Pesto has to be my favorite. You can find the recipe here: Fresh Pesto.

I also found a recipe for a raw garlic based tea. How did it taste? Not horrible. I know that’s not a rave review for flavor, but it’s raw garlic tea: “not horrible” is as good as it gets, and I’m a garlic lover. Garlic Tea. I’ve drunk it twice and will do so again: my body wanted more, so it must be doing something good.

I am very happy to say that my mom has been cancer free for 18 years now. She loves garlic too. No, I’m not saying that garlic cured her. I’m just saying that this happy ending smells like garlic!

“The rabble with them began to crave other food, and again the Israelites started wailing and said, ‘If only we had meat to eat!  We remember the fish we ate in Egypt at no cost—also the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic But now we have lost our appetite; we never see anything but this manna!’” Numbers 11:4-6

Father’s Day Fun

elias-birthday-098.jpgIf you have a healthy father in your life, go ahead and take a moment to appreciate that. Let the gratitude ooze out of you. If you’re going to see a father this weekend, try to compliment his healthy habits and participate with him in them.

“Dad, thanks for eating your vegetables. Watching you eat them let me know Mom wasn’t crazy and green plants on my plate won’t kill me.”

“Dad, want to go for a walk with me? It’s good for us and gives us something to do while we catch up.”

“Honey, Let’s play outside with our kids. It’s healthy for them, for us, and it makes them more tired and easier to corral indoors.”

Heavenly Father, thank you for the fathers in my life.

Happy Father’s Day!

The father of a righteous child has great joy; a man who fathers a wise son rejoices in him. Proverbs 23:24

A Diet Constant

We don’t always do what we know we should, especially when it comes to eating healthy and exercising regularly. Today’s post is a friendly reminder that God’s love for us doesn’t change with our willpower.

Antioxidant Rich (Green) Lemonade

Kids, this lemonade is green because it’s made from green lemons called limes. What’s that spinach doing on the counter? Um, nothing, I made a salad or something. See the lime? Green lime, green drink. Nothing funny going on here, that’s for sure. Drink up!

Ingredients:

1/4 cup lemon juice OR lime juice

4 cups water

1 cup spinach or kale

2-4 packets Truvia or other natural sweetener

Supplies: Blender, measuring cups

Directions: Blend all ingredients until smooth. Strain to remove all evidence of leaves, unless you think you can get away with leaving them in. Top with a slice of lime for proof that the green color is not suspicious. Chill and enjoy!

Sesame Skin Street

Hi, and welcome to Sesame Skin Street! Skin health is brought to you today by the letters A, C, and E and by the number 3.

sesame skinLet’s learn the ABCs of eating for skin health. Ready?

sesame aA is for Vitamin A which helps the skin cells grow. Making new cells is how your skin repairs itself. Beta carotene converts into Vitamin A, so you should eat orange foods. Carrots are orange. What other foods are orange? Oranges, cantaloupe, sweet potatoes, and winter squash. Good job, you get an A…a Vitamin A+, to be exact! Your parents are so proud.

sesame c

C is for Vitamin C which helps synthesize collagen. Collagen keeps your skin smooth and taught. Strawberries, oranges, tomatoes, and broccoli are high in vitamin C. C is for Collagen, kids! You get a sticker.

sesame eE is for Vitamin E.

3 is for Omega 3. E and 3 work together to boost your immune system, reduce inflammation, and protect your skin from skin damaging, wrinkle causing free radicals. They’re found in similar foods such as nuts, seeds, fish, and olive oil.

Be Your Own Mom

“Mom, can I have a snack?”

“Dinner’s in an hour, so you can have fruit or vegetables.”

With an overly dramatic siiiiiigh, my son slumps his shoulders and goes back to playing with Legos. He’s hungry, but not hungry enough for healthy food. Another son asks me the same snack question, receives the same produce answer, fishes an apple out of the fridge, and sits at the table to munch on it. I open the pantry door in search of spaghetti sauce and come face to face with a bag of chocolate covered almonds. Suddenly I’m hungry.

037newDinner’s in an hour, so you can have fruit or vegetables.

My own words echo in my mind and my hand hesitates, fingers inches away from crunchy chocolate goodness. If I “spoil my dinner”, no one will know. No one will put me in time out or make me skip dessert. Part of me is glad I’m a grown up and part of me wishes my mother was there to give me limits like when I was a child. It’s so much easier to do the right thing when you don’t have a choice.

Then it hits me: maybe I should treat myself like a child sometimes. I need to BMOM: Be My Own Mother.

“Only one cookie, Sweetie. Take smaller bites.”

“You’ve had enough, dear.”

“Go outside and play.”

“Bed time! You need your rest.”

“Get your finger out of your nose!”

A mother takes care of you, reminds you what’s best for you, and implement limits. This Mother’s Day show your mom you love her, then take a little time to BMOM. You can even make yourself breakfast in bed.

When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a [wo]man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. 1 Corinthians 13:11 (NIV)

Skin a Deer, I mean Doe

skin sound of musicDid you know that healthy weight loss habits like exercise and drinking plenty of water help keep your skin healthy and looking great? Next week we’ll look closer at foods that support skin health, but for today, we’re going to sing a silly song. This is to the tune of “Doe a Deer” from The Sound of Music.

What Kind of Water is Best for Weight Loss?

The wet kind!

Most things you consume in a liquid state will keep you hydrated; some just have extra benefits or extra pitfalls that come with them. For example, juice has all of the vitamins and sugar found in fruit, but none of the fiber and mandatory chewing that slows down calorie consumption.

So here’s a quick 4 question quiz to see if you know how to keep your body hydrated and on the track to good health! I’ve included a few hints to help you along the way.

gila-monster-hissing

1. What percent of your body is water?
a. 30% like a gila monster after a day in the desert sun.
b. 60% One man actually lost 25 pounds of water weight in 48 hours to “prove” that scales are useless. That’s approaching gila monster humidity and he was promptly rushed off to get an IV drip.
c. 90% like a jellyfish.

water glasses2. How many ounces (total) of water should you drink each day?
a. 8 ounces – your blindingly bright yellow or orange colored pee should tell you that this is not the correct answer. Bad blog reader, bad! Most water bottles aren’t even that small.
b. 8 8 ounce glasses – correct, but don’t be lazy, do the math.
c. 64 ounces. Correct! (8oz x 8 glasses = 64) That’s 8 cups of water, or 4 pints, or 2 quarts or one half gallon, or three hours sipping at a water fountain. (I’m glad fountains exist, but when you’re thirsty, they’re maddeningly slow to drink from. Some sort of wall hose would be preferable.)

coffee3. Which of the following beverages count towards your 64 ounces?
a. Coffee and tea. It’s water with natural brown food coloring. Don’t believe me? Check out this myth-busting research.
b. Juice and lemonade. It’s still mostly water, just watch the sugar intake. Sip and savor, but save the chugging for water.
c. Soda. Nope, not even close. It’s liquid, but your body has to use all the water it contains to flush out all of the chemicals it also contains, so you end up not hydrated.

4. Which of the following are benefits of drinking enough water?
a. Flushing out toxins. This is obviously good, right? No commentary needed? Why am I still typing?
b. Energized muscles. Not feeling up for a little exercise? Drink some water; dehydration causes muscle fatigue.
c. Hydrated skin that looks good. Eat your heart out, Maybelline! Moisturizers create a barrier that helps keep moisture in your skin, but if the moisture isn’t coming from the inside out, that barrier is ineffective.

Two footnotes:
drop1. If you need an answer key, leave a comment and I’ll contact you; I have some magic beans I’d like to sell you.
2. Gila monsters have more like 70% water in their bodies, not 30%, but they LOOK so darn dry! And in the dry months they survive by not urinating for months. Gross, but so very cool too. The point is, you are not a gila monster. Raise your glass and drink up! A toast to your health!

Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” John 4:13-14

Eating to Reduce Hypertension and Lose Weight

We’ve been learning about heart health for a while now and some of you may be wondering why a weight loss blog would spend so much time on one organ. It happens to be a very important organ, but still, what’s up with that? The answer is simple: the same habits that improve the health of your heart also help you lose weight. Exercising regularly, sleeping 7-8 hours each night, eating plenty of plant foods like vegetables…the weight loss habits and the heart health habits go hand in hand.

If you’re losing weight by developing healthy habits, I want you to know you’re getting a bonus: your heart is getting healthier every day. Lucky you! It’s not just about how great you look on the outside; you’re looking sexy on the inside too.

hypertension 6The Three Musketeers are great dinner companions so invite them onto your plate every chance you get. (If you invite Salt, do so cautiously; Salt belches and forgets his wallet, so a little of him goes a long way.) The Three Musketeers—or Three MagCalPots—are high in magnesium, calcium, and potassium which work to lower blood pressure which helps keep your heart beating long and strong. The following foods are high in all three MagCalPot elements:

Leafy greens

Seeds and nuts

Yogurt or kefir

Legumes

Fatty fish like salmon

Broccoli

Figs

Bananas and avocados are high in two of the three, so they can tag along. This list looks suspiciously like the ingredients in Fat Fish Fiber Fruit™. I wonder if the Three Musketeers are shareholders.

Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. Proverbs 4:23

Obesity: Post Mortem is a Must-See

obesity post mortemObesity: Post Mortem is fascinating. It’s not for everyone, perhaps: there are people who would rather bathe in kale chips for a year than see a dead body cut open. But for those who can stomach it, I highly recommend watching it. The show offers a rare glimpse into the inner workings of an obese body. I’ve researched heart disease and type two diabetes for blog series on those topics and I have to tell you, I felt like Buddy in Elf when he sees Santa: “I know him, I know him!” except I was yelling “I read about that! I read about that!” at the TV.

It’s one thing to read about the heart working harder when you have high blood pressure and it’s another thing to see the physical heart of a woman who had high blood pressure and see how thin and weak the muscle was by the end.

It’s one thing to read about how high blood pressure (and a weakening heart) leads to fluid build up in the lungs and it’s another thing to see a mortician squeeze water out of those lungs.

It’s one thing to read about fatty liver disease and it’s another to see what an enlarged fatty liver looks like, each microscopic cell so full of yellow fat that the organ appears orange-pink instead of blood red.

obesity post 2Obesity: Post Mortem proves that obesity does, indeed, affect internal organs. I don’t need to have faith that it does because I’ve seen it. That strengthens my faith in the logical opposite: exercising, drinking water, eating lots of vegetables and fruits and losing weight in the process is helping my organs.

Obesity: Post Mortem is a strong motivator. Whether you’re working to lose weight or to maintain a healthy weight, Obesity makes you want to stick with those healthy habits. Living a healthy lifestyle takes faith that what you’re doing makes a difference. You can’t always see the effect of your efforts right away. You can do everything right– eat well, exercise, sleep adequately, drink water– and not loose a pound for weeks. You have to have faith that your body is reaping the benefits cell by cell, system by system, on a level you can’t see yet.

So, pull up a chair, skip the popcorn (it is an autopsy, after all), and enjoy the show!

From the fellowship offering you are to bring a food offering to the Lord: the internal organs and all the fat that is connected to them. Leviticus 3:3
